Awards Committee

Mission Statement

The Committee is responsible for the selection of recipients of awards associated with the AAAP in a timely fashion. The Committee is also responsible to recommend to the Board of Directors candidates for nomination to life membership in the AAAP, and to recommend to the American Veterinary Medical Foundation the candidate for the Pfizer Excellence in Poultry Research Award. On request from the Board of the Directors, the Committee will develop guidelines for new awards or evaluate guidelines for current awards.

Specific Objectives
  • The Committee selects the recipients for the P.P. Levine Award for the best publication in Avian Diseases in the preceding year, the AAAP Special Service Award, the Pharmacia-Upjohn Achievement Award, the C.A. Bottorff Award, Reed Rumsey Award, and the Bayer-Snoeyenbos New Investigator Award. The names of the recipients of these awards will be presented to the President and the Secretary-Treasurer of the AAAP at least 60 days prior to the Annual Meeting of the AAAP. With the exception of the recipient(s) of the Reed Rumsey Award, the names of the recipients are kept secret. The Chair of the Award Committee will notify the recipients of the Reed Rumsey Award that they will receive this award at the next Annual Meeting. The Chair of the Program Committee, the President and Secretary-Treasurer of the AAAP will also be notified as early as possible, but not later than March 1. The Chair of the Committee will provide the Secretary-Treasurer with biographical information concerning the recipients of the different awards in a timely fashion in order to facilitate the presentation of the awards during the Annual Awards Luncheon of the AAAP.
  • The Committee selects annually the best poster presented by a student during the poster session of the AAAP program.
  • The Committee selects annually the best oral presentation given by a student during the scientific session of the AAAP program.
  • The Committee selects the AAAP candidate for the Pfizer Excellence in Poultry Research Award and the Chair will notify the American Veterinary Medical Foundation (AVMF) at least 18 months prior to the presentation of the Award. The Chair will communicate with the AVMF to ensure that the nomination reaches the AVMF in a timely fashion.
  • The Chair will submit write-ups on the recipients of all awards to the editor of Avian Diseases in time for publication in the October-December issue of Avian Diseases of that year.
  • The committee encourages the members of the AAAP to nominate candidates for all awards with the exception of the P.P. Levine Award and the student poster and presentation awards. The recipients of the latter two awards are determined by the committee at the annual meeting.
