The Outstanding Animal Welfare Presentation Award and the Barger/Opengart Poultry Welfare Scholarship
In the spirit of promoting animal welfare presentations, the AAAP announces the Outstanding Animal Welfare Presentation Award. This new award, funded by the families of Drs. Kate Barger and Ken Opengart, will be awarded to the most outstanding animal welfare presentation during the annual American Association of Avian Pathologists meeting. Presentations should reflect original research that drives continuous improvement of poultry welfare outcomes and may include topics that enhance welfare understanding, highlight practical application of animal welfare principles and best practices, and/or evaluate innovative technology.
Outstanding Animal Welfare Presentation Award Criteria:
Eligible abstracts for consideration of the Outstanding Animal Welfare Presentation Award will be determined by the AAAP Program Committee. The same person is not allowed to win the award more than once in a two-year period. The winner(s) will be recognized during the AAAP awards banquet, will receive a $500 honorarium, and will receive a plaque of distinction following the meeting.

The Barger/Opengart Poultry Welfare Scholarship is intended to recognize students with a demonstrated interest in studying and/or specializing in poultry welfare. Scholarship funds must be used to support student experiential learning opportunities that will further enhance knowledge and/or specialization in the field of poultry welfare. Funded by the families of Drs. Kate Barger and Ken Opengart, dedicated members of AAAP, this scholarship aims to encourage a career track in poultry welfare and facilitate student interest in welfare education and research. In addition to providing $1500 to the selected student, the supporters of this scholarship will invite the student to share their learnings and experiences to further enhance their understanding of poultry welfare and expand their network of poultry welfare experts.
