This webinar was held and recorded on April 21st, 2025 at 1pm EST. Please join the Respiratory Diseases Committee as we dive into “The Challenges and Promises of IBV Serotyping with qPCR and Sequencing.” Drs. Rodrigo Gallardo and Brian Jordan have vast research and diagnostic laboratory experience utilizing qPCR and first- and next-generation sequencing techniques, and Dr. TJ Gaydos has ample field experience in using this data to develop IB control programs.  We look forward to providing a better understanding of what the current IBV typing methods can tell us and where diagnostic services may be going from here. Avian Diseases Journal Special Issue Now Available

 

I am pleased to announce the publication of the 2024 Special Issue of Avian Diseases (Volume 68 Issue S1) that has the unofficial title “Current Infectious Bacterial Diseases of Poultry.” The entire Special Issue is being published Open Access. The 19 articles in this Special Issue are divided into 6 important bacterial disease sections: 1) Avibacterium paragallinarum, 2) Enterococcus spp., 3) Streptococcus gallolyticus, 4) Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale, 5) Campylobacter hepaticus, and 6) Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae.

AAAP Membership Dues Increase - Effective 2026

Starting in 2026, AAAP membership dues will increase to accommodate inflation-related expenses and ensure continued support for our profession.

  • Full and Associate Member Dues: Increasing from $220/year (2025) to $250/year (2026)
  • Student Member Dues: Increasing from $20/year (2025) to $25/year (2026)

At the January 2025 Board of Directors Meeting, the AAAP Board carefully considered this decision, recognizing the importance of maintaining the association's ability to serve its members effectively. This is the first dues increase since 2015, and it was made with thoughtful deliberation to compensate for inflation related increased expenses within the association to ensure AAAP can continue addressing the evolving needs of the poultry profession and its members.

APHIS Updates Policy to Enhance Surveillance of Turkey Flocks in Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza Affected States

As part of its ongoing, multi-faceted efforts to combat the spread of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service today is updating its policy for pre-slaughter surveillance to enhance testing of turkey flocks in affected states.  In late-December 2024, APHIS became aware of a genetic link between turkeys potentially infected with HPAI H5N1, virus detected in raw pet food, and an infected household cat. 

These updates include implementing isolation with clinical monitoring and premovement testing 72 hours prior to sending to slaughter, for turkey premises outside control areas in HPAI-affected states. Specifically, APHIS will be piloting this enhanced pre-slaughter surveillance, starting with turkey premises greater than 500 birds in Minnesota and South Dakota, based on current and historical HPAI detections of commercial turkey premises in these states. These states were selected because of genetic linkages to virus from infected cats and because of the high percentage of cases in turkeys in those states. APHIS will continue to evaluate progress of the outbreak and may update this policy, if needed, to include additional states.

Call for Abstracts for 2025 AAAP Annual Meeting

Deadline: January 24th, 2025

The AAAP is calling for abstracts to be presented at the 2025 AAAP Annual Meeting in Portland, OR on July 29-31. The deadline to submit an abstract is January 24th, 2025. You will be notified of your submission status on February 14th, 2025. If you have any questions please contact the AAAP business office at [email protected] or 904-425-5735.

  • The AAAP is using a new abstract submission system called Oxford Abstracts. You will need to create a profile with Oxford to submit. Please keep this login information in case you need to edit your submission later.
  • You must be a AAAP member to submit an abstract. Join AAAP if you are not already a member.
  • The AAAP Annual Meeting will provide RACE certified continuing education credits. In order to obtain this certification presenters will need to provide a CV no more than two pages long during the abstract submission process. Students will have to provide three recommendation forms.
  • This will be a hybrid meeting, meaning you have the option of presenting online. Online Presentations will be prerecorded and uploaded to AAAP’s learning management system. Attendees of the meeting will be able to view (but not download) the presentation from July 1st to August 1st. Oral presentations will not be recorded and will remain in-person only.
  • Please read our speaker agreement carefully before submitting.
  • Oral Presentations are 15 minutes, 12 minutes for presentation and 3 minutes for questions.
  • Posters should be no bigger than 4’ by 4’
  • The AAAP provides travel support to speakers upon request. Travel support is given from a fixed pool of funds evenly to all student presenters who request it. This means if you do not require travel support more is available for other speakers who do.
  • Presenters have registration fees discounted using a code that will be provided at a later date. Presenters must not share this code with any other parties.

AAAP New Committee Structure 

The AAAP Board of Directors proposes a new organization for all of the AAAP Committees. 

The change comes from the guidance of a paid consultant during the Strategy Session at the 2023 Fall Board of Directors Meeting.  The principal reasons for making these organizational changes are:

  • Create major areas of focus to strengthen the partnership between committees and the Board of Directors. 
  • Realign all committee's goals to match AAAP's vision & mission statements.  
  • Increase existing member engagement within the committees.
  • Encourage new member participation within the committees.
  • Improve user experience when navigating to committee pages on the AAAP website.
  • Reorganize the responsibilities asked of committee chairs to avoid overtaxing our volunteers  

Summary of Changes

  1. Creation of 4 Overarching Governing Committees for AAAP Inc.  The Board of Directors will appoint a chair to manage each division.  Suggestions from committee chairs are welcome.  The divisions are:
    1. Membership
    2. Educational Resources and Outreach
    3. Food Safety and Animal Welfare
    4. Infectious Diseases
  2. Renaming the Auditing Committee to the Financial Auditing Committee
  3. Renaming the Education Committee to Educational Resources Committee
  4. Moving the Small Flock Committee to the renamed Educational Resources Committee
  5. Creation of a Student Engagement Committee
  6. Moving the AAAP Mentorship, Student Chapters, and SAVMA under the new Student Engagement Committee
  7. Renaming Toxic, Infectious, Miscellaneous, Emerging (TIME) Committee to Emerging Diseases Committee
  8. Concluding the Diseases of Public Health Significance Committee due to significant overlap with other committees
