AAAP Histopathology Interest Group Request for Histology Case Submissions

AAAP Histopathology Interest Group Request for Histology Case Submissions

Deadline: May 4th

Join us for the inaugural AAAP avian histopathology interest group virtual session to be held on Thursday June 1 from 9am-noon EST.  Dr. Luke Borst will serve as keynote speaker with his presentation on “Gross lesions and histopathology of Enterococcus cecorum infection in poultry.” Potential speakers are asked to submit a title or a brief abstract (less than 100 words) of an interesting histology case to Dr. Rob Porter at [email protected]. The submitted presentations will be accepted in order until all slots are filled. The deadline for abstract submission is Thursday May 4. Cases might present a new histological finding, a diagnostic conundrum, or a classical poultry condition. The chosen abstracts can then be presented as either a powerpoint and/or full description of a digitized histology slide. This is a great opportunity for either a pathology resident or the most seasoned diagnostician to present findings. We will encourage selected presenters to download a single digitized slide on the AAAP histology repository by two weeks prior to the virtual meeting.  This will allow all registered participants to view various slides prior to the virtual session. Please keep in mind that sharing a digitized histology slide with your colleagues is encouraged, but not required.

The slide session will be held prior to the AAAP meeting in order to reduce conflict with other committee meetings, allow for broader attendance and to provide ample time for discussion. Field veterinarians are encouraged to attend.

FFAR & AAVMC Open Applications for 2023 FFAR Veterinary Student Research Fellowship

FFAR & AAVMC Open Applications for
2023 FFAR Veterinary Student Research Fellowship

WASHINGTON (March 15, 2023) – Veterinarians with experience in medicine, animal sciences and public health add unique perspectives to solving critical food and agriculture challenges. To support the development of future veterinary researchers, the Foundation for Food & Agriculture Research (FFAR) and the American Association of Veterinary Medical Colleges (AAVMC) are seeking applications for FFAR’s Veterinary Student Research Fellowships (FFAR Vet Fellows), a fellowship supporting veterinary student research at the interface of food-animal production.

Veterinary science is critical to solving challenges affecting nutritional security, environmental sustainability and public health. However, most fellowships available to veterinary students are limited to traditional biomedical research, with limited opportunity to conduct research outside that scope. To ensure students are informed of the numerous opportunities for veterinarians, FFAR and AAVMC established the FFAR Vet Fellows in 2018 to support veterinary student research ranging from climate change to pandemic prevention. The three-month fellowship prepares fellows for multi-faceted careers in science and public service. The fellows complete their research with a qualified mentor and present their findings at the annual Veterinary Scholars Symposium.

AASV check in tool: emotional well-being after depop / AVMA AXON course on psych impacts of depop

AASV check in tool: emotional well-being after depop / AVMA AXON course on psych impacts of depop

Following the AAAP AWC meeting in Atlanta, there has been some discussion regarding the availability of tools and support from AAAP to ensure that members can communicate about their experiences, frustrations, etc. after depopulation. We know that the last 13 months have not been easy for the industry for many of our members, and for those directly involved in depopulation implementation. Making sure that people have an outlet to talk and a safe forum for support is really important.

To that end, AASV has produced some very thoughtful and useful documents for their members, including the one linked below. It is a ‘check-in tool’ to use to assess the resiliency and emotional wellness of individuals/teams involved in depopulation measures. While it was originally developed for swine vets, the application of this tool in poultry teams and companies could be very beneficial.
