Scholarships

Eskelund PreceptorshipThe purpose of the preceptorships is to enable interested veterinary students to expand their education, training, and veterinary skills through practical experience in their specialized field. The AAAP has solicited the cooperation of its members in establishing a variety of training sites including universities, diagnostic laboratories, poultry production companies and poultry breeding companies. 

Poultry ScholarshipThe American Association of Avian Pathologists Foundation Scholarship Program accepts scholarship applications from students who are pursuing a career in poultry health and well-being and/or food safety in North America.

 

Awards

Reed Rumsey AwardThe AAAP annually selects an outstanding student(s) to be the recipient of the Reed Rumsey Student Award for Advancement of Avianalt Medicine. Applicants must be veterinary students, graduate students, residents, or interns pursuing an existing program in a College of Veterinary Medicine or appropriate department in an academic institution. The recipient of this award is invited to present their research in an oral presentation at the Avian Medicine Section of the Annual Meeting of the American Veterinary Medical Association. 

Richard Rimler Award: The AAAP selects a graduate student for this award who demonstrates excellence in poultry health or poultry disease research. Applicants should be enrolled currently in a thesis-requiring Master of Science program or a Ph.D. program, or have received the degree within the year preceding the application deadline.  A D.V.M degree is not required. The recipient of this award is invited to present their research in an oral presentation at the Avian Medicine Section of the Annual Meeting of the American Veterinary Medical Association.

Schwartz Travel AwardThe AAAP annually selects an outstanding student(s) to receive the L. Dwight Schwartz Travel Scholarship to attend the Avian Medicine Section of the Annual Meeting of the American Veterinary Medical Association.The purpose of the award is to introduce veterinary students to the many aspects of poultry medicine and to facilitate their interaction with research scientists, poultry diagnosticians, and clinical poultry veterinarians who would further their education and training.

 

AAAP Student Chapters: Student chapters of AAAP may be organized at schools or colleges of veterinary medicine under the direction of an advisor who is a current member in good standing of AAAP. Student Chapters must apply for membership and submit and annual report to the AAAP.

NAVLE Study Information: The AAAP has put together a study guide on basic poultry medicine information to aid in those veterinary students studying for the National Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners (NAVLE) examination.

Leadership Opportunities

USAHA conferenceA selected AAAP student member will receive a stipend to attend the United States Animal Health Association conference.

AVMA Emerging Leaders: This opportunity is for a selected AAAP member to attend the Veterinary Leadership Conference, held each January in Chicago, free of charge.  Veterinarians who are AVMA members 5-15 years post-gradutation and recent graduates 0-5 years post-graduation who are interested in developing their leadership skills are encouraged to apply.

AVMA Governmental Relations Externship Program: The AVMA extern program pairs talented veterinary students together with the AVMA Governmental Relations Division for a four-week program that introduces externs to the breadth of public policy issues facing the profession and provides hands-on lobbying experience with legislators and staffers on Capitol Hill.
