AAAP Student Membership is $25/year and includes an online subscription to the journal Avian Diseases.
Student Resources
AAAP offers multiple benefits for students. At just $25 a year, students gain access to mentorship and externship opportunities, as well as scholarships and other awards. Student members also have the ability to present at the AAAP Annual Meeting and network with industry professionals.

Student Announcement:
The History of Avian Medicine committee would like to make all AAAP student members aware of the Smithcors Essay Contest offered by the American Veterinary Medical History Society (AVMHS). The contest is open to all veterinary students currently enrolled in an AVMA-accredited veterinary college. Winners receive cash prizes ($1,200 for 1st, $1,000 for 2nd, $800 for 3rd, and $500 for 4th) plus possible publication of the article in the Veterinary Heritage journal and a one-year membership in the Society.
Essays can cover a wide range of historical and veterinary topics. Examples include: • Development of treatments, techniques and/or research • Instruments • Biologicals or pharmaceuticals • Diseases or surgery • Species emphasis • Veterinary practice and profession in general Essay Preparation and Format • Public health issues • Legislation related to veterinary medicine • Veterinarians or veterinary medicine as portrayed in literature, art, or society • Biographical information (limited to deceased individuals) • Veterinary colleges and institutions .
Essay submissions are due June 5, 2026. Further information on the contest can be found at https://www.avmhs.org/essay-contest. Founded in 1978, the AVMHS is a non-profit educational organization dedicated to promoting research, study, understanding, communication, and appreciation for the history of the veterinary medical profession.

Awards and Scholarships
The AAAP Foundation annually offers 40+ scholarships to students interested in poultry medicine. Scholarship award amounts range from $500 to $5,000, helping students defray housing, living and travel expenses incurred while attending externships and pay for travel to the AVMA Convention to present their work during the AAAP Annual Meeting.

Student Chapters
AAAP encourages and supports Student Chapters as part of its mission to promote scientific knowledge to enhance the health, well-being, and productivity of poultry. Student Chapters benefit students who are interested in becoming poultry veterinarians and students who are interested in learning more about poultry medicine or food safety related to poultry medicine.

Applications/Reporting
Student chapters of AAAP may be organized at schools or colleges of veterinary medicine under the direction of an advisor who is a current member in good standing of AAAP. Current AAAP Student Chapters must submit an annual report to the AAAP.

Vet School Liaisons
The AAAP has put together a list of the current liaisons with poultry veterinary colleges. The vet liaison acts as a point of contact between vet school and the American Association of Avian Pathologists! They disseminate information about programs and scholarships AAAP provides to support students.

NAVLE Exam
The AAAP has put together a study guide on basic poultry medicine information to aid in those veterinary students studying for the National Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners (NAVLE) examination.

This section includes a Power Point presentation by Dr. Eric Gingerich describing the different career possibilities and aspects of poultry medicine, and a student webinar featuring an online panel of 5 distinguished poultry veterinarians. AVMA Extern Program
The AVMA extern program pairs talented veterinary students together with the AVMA Governmental Relations Division for a four-week program that introduces externs to the breadth of public policy issues facing the profession and provides hands-on lobbying experience with legislators and staffers on Capitol Hill.
